We all know the importance of eating well and staying physically active as we age, but active aging involves much more than exercise and a healthy diet. The World Health Organization defines active aging as “the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation, and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.” It’s a mindset where people of any age, especially older adults, open themselves up to trying new things and experiences, meeting new people, and embracing what’s possible.
While many older adults are determined to remain in their homes forever, studies show that this can often result in feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anxiety that can contribute to health issues, such as heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. Active senior living communities can be a great solution, where resident lifestyle programming provides seniors with regular activities and opportunities to socialize, exercise, and try new things. This increased activity can help both physically and mentally, resulting in higher levels of happiness and increased quality of life.

In 2021, Capri Communities, which includes Dane County communities Drumlin Reserve, Hyland Campus, and Vista West, introduced the Enjoy Life Adventure Series, designed to bring community residents together to interact and explore new adventures outside of their buildings and daily lifestyle programming. Past activities have included horseback riding, goat yoga, visiting Lake Geneva’s Winterfest, rock wall climbing at Adventure Rock, and a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.
Capri built on the success of the Adventure Series by introducing Enjoy Life on the Road, offering residents and community members the chance to take overnight group trips to exciting destinations, such as Cape Cod, Italy, Iceland, and New York City. Then in 2023, Capri introduced the Enjoy Life Active Aging Symposium, featuring dynamic speakers; exhibitors; and interactive activities, such as pickleball, yoga, and dancing. This is a free, annual event designed to encourage older adults to stay involved, try new things, and live life to the fullest—whatever that means to them.

While downsizing and making the move into senior living can be a big decision, senior living communities, like Capri, can help feed the mind, body, and soul of older adults with stimulating activity and socialization—the benefits of which are significant in helping people live happy, fulfilling lives.
